China’s Online Game Revenues Reach RMB 10.6 bln
The Game Committee of the Publishers Association of China and the International Data Corporation (IDC) have issued a “2007 China Game Industry Survey Report” from information obtained from over 200,000 surveys. The report shows that as of December 2007 China had over 40.17 mln online gamers, an increase of 23% from 2006; Actual sales revenue reached RMB 10.57 bln, up 61.5% from 2006. In 2007 22.34 mln paid for online games in China, more than half of all gamers in the nation. It is estimated that by 2012 the number of people playing online games in China will reach 84.56 mln and sales revenue will reach RMB 26.23 bln.
The “Report” also reveals that telecommunications businesses earned RMB 26.11 bln in direct revenue generated from online games in 2007 and the IT industry earned RMB 9.76 bln. In 2007 a total of 28 online games, self-developed by 12 Chinese enterprises, entered the overseas markets and generated a sales revenue of USD 55 mln; Also, there were a total of 126 Chinese online game development companies with 250 self-developed online games, and, as of November 2007, a total of 21,034 online game R&D personnel; Lastly, revenue from operating mobile online games reached RMB 120 mln and sales revenue in the PC game market reached RMB 73.5 mln.
